Keep you steppin

   VIDEO OF THE DAY

K.O.S Tidbit: Did  you know that this song was written for Rakim? Yes the greatest MC of all time. It seems that in the middle of doing his latest album Rakim hit writers block. Lyor Cohen (DEF JAM) asked Search to write something for Rakim. Guess how that went over? Search stated in interview "Lyor has me in his office and calls Eric B and says (heavily accented) Eric ..Search has written Rakim a song and it's a hit. tell him Search" Search  says "The next thing I hear is a dial tone and the next instant Lyor's secretary says Mr Cohen I have Eric B on line 2. Eric begins to cuss Lyor out and state emphatically HE IS RAKIM NOBODY WRITES FOR RAKIM  after that I changed a few words and kept it for me and Pete"

IT WAS THE FRESHEST

It was a blue moon last night so the Oldhead was out. I went to the Lady B Basement Party at the Robin Hood Dell East. (Philadelphia, Pa) There were performances by Sweet Tee, Kool G Rap, Brand Nubian,Kurtis Blow, SWV,Kool Moe Dee and the Treacherous Three with the finally handled by Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick.  There were special appearances by Icons from Hip Hop's early days. The show was hosted by Lady B "queen of this rap citeee" and by an annoying Perry P and Evette Money.  I wanted to give my thoughts on the show, performances (all are not in performing order) and give each a Keep It Oldskool Rating.

Sweet Tee

The show was opened by Sweet Tee. I guess her not having a large catalog mandated that she would have to go first. Still very beautiful she did her classics. "It's My Beat", "I Got Da Feeling",and "It's Like That Yall". She also did her 95 single "What's Up Star" that some in the crowd knew but not all. The crowd that was  not yet to it's sold out capacity still gave her love for that reason and the performance I will give her 3 Jawns out of 5

Kool G Rap

Next up was Kool G Rap whom we at K.O.S rank as #6 all time in Hip Hop (That's right number 6) I have never seen G Rap perform live so if this is his normal way of performing I apologize. I did not understand how when doing an OLDSKOOL show you come out to "new" music. His first song was one that I have never heard. If I NEVER HEARD it. I know some of my lesser Hip Hop inclined people in attendance had no clue. He did finally settle in and do what we came to see "Road to the Riches", Ill Street Blues and even a cringe worthy rendition of "Talk Like Sex" He then brought out a homie who no one knew to do a song. (?) With that he was gone.  Although we love Kool G Rap we have to give his performance 2 Jawns out of 5

Brand Nubian took to the stage and let everyone know that their set would not be as long as they normally perform. Then jumped right into the hits. From "One for All,Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down","Love me or Leave Me alone,"Whats the 411 (Puba verse) "What Goes Around" to close the set out with "Slow Down" Through it all the crowd was very into the performance and the trio did not disappoint. We gave Brand Nubian 3 Jawns out of 5

SWV

SWV hit the stage with the backing track blasting the "Right Here" Human Nature Remix. Their set seemed to be the shortest of all. With the catalog of hit the Sisters With Voices have you would have thought they would have gone long with their set. They made sure to add little dance steps to the lively performances of "Im So Into You,You're the One, Anything" and closed the way to short set with "Rain". Of course the women in attendance loved the performance and sung right along with the girls. We Gave SWV 4 Jawns out of 5

Kool Moe Deetreacherous

Kool Moe, La Sunshine and Special K hit the stage and "older old heads" were ready. Kool Moe not the slim frame rapper that we all remember from the 70s and 80s,but was still able to hit some steps.Kool Moe Dee belted out "I go to Work,Wild Wild West, and even "Go See the Doctor". The Treacherous 3 also gave the younger crowd in attendance a little snippet of how they used to do it out in the park. In what was the first surprise cameo of the night Spooonie G was brought out. Many do not know that Spoonie was an original member of the group. Spoonie did "Im the Godfather (of Rap) We gave Kool Moe Dee/Treacherous Three 4 Jawns out of 5

Kurtis Blow came to the stage and provided that this is 42nd year in Hip Hop.  As the first Rapper to sign with a "major" label Kurtis Blow has been around for a long time. Along with Kurtis was a crew of B-Boys who were there to lend support to the 55 year icon. Kurtis performed "If I ruled the World", The Breaks, AJ Scratch and also had to show that he could still "break" a little. The second special guest was Kangol Kid from UTFO. Kangol was only to happy to do his verse from Hip Hop classic "Roxanne Roxanne" We gave Kurtis Blow 3.5 Jawns out of 5

cat

Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick were last to come to the stage. As the "Worlds Greatest Entertainer" Doug did not disappoint. There is no wonder why that in most Oldskool show with Doug on the bill he is the last to perform. Slick Rick seemed to have missed his initial cue to come out (maybe was still polishing the "truck jewelry) The minor setback behind them the got right into "The Show" the crowd was on it's feet and had no qualms to jumping in to finish a verse while Doug and Slick caught their breath. Doug E Fresh beat boxing is an art itself. "La Di Da Di" was of course performed. As is the usual with a Doug E Fresh performance Lil Viscious was brought out to do "Freaks" Slick Rick did "Teenage Love" and as always the 2 put on a great show.
We Gave Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick
Jawns out 5

It was a great event. There was no drama
In addition to the classic songs there were classic outfits such as a guy wearing Cazals.(oh that was me) There was a couple wearing matching Gucci sneakers and sweatsuits etc. Lady B Basement Party 2014 was the Freshest

Let me show you something

KEEP IT OLDSKOOL Presents
Classic Show Profile

20 years ago (1994) One of the greatest shows of all time ended. May 19,1994 was the last first run episode. The show that featured and became a launching pad for some well known stars and even an Oscar winner. In the final season the show seemed to be just a shell of what it was and had no involvement from the creator and nor his family members. The show had premiered 4 years earlier (1990) The show pushed the envelope and set the standard for all the shows that followed. Now even in 2014 you can mention a phrase from a sketch or a characters name and instantly break into a impression.

In Living Color

The show was In Living Color. The brainchild of Keenan Ivory Wayans was one of the flagship shows of a fledgling "4th network". Keenan has stated that after a screening of his movie "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" Fox television reps came to him and told him that they wanted him to do a show for the network, Initially hesitant as he wanted to do movies,he was swayed when he was told that he could "do the show he wanted to do".  The shows initial lineup in its first season was Jim Carrey,Kim Coles,David Alan Grier,Keenany Ivory Wayans, Kim Wayans,T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh,Tommy Davidson, Damon Wayans and Shawn Wayans  The constant battles with the censors aside the show had instant success.

The show introduced us to future stars Jim Carey and Jamie Fox. Always a family affair Keenan made sure that many of his 9 brothers and sisters would also appear and play prominent rolls on the show. Some of the best sketches were sometimes completely improvised. The show was not without controversy. The sketch starring fan favorites David Alan Grier and Damon Wayans as Blaine and Antoine "Men on Film" during the 1993 Super Bowl Halftime show caused quite a stir. In later seasons Keenan not happy that Fox had begun syndicating the show by rerunning episodes of the show without his consent left the show. Soon after all of the Wayans departed. Of the original cast only Jim Carrey, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier and T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh stayed for the entire run.

The show can now be seen by a whole new generation of people. Some of the material is quite dated, but still quite funny. There was an attempt by Keenan and Fox to do a "reboot" of the show. A pilot was shot after an exhaustive casting call. The show did not make it to the air. One of the reasons that Keenan gave was that it would be unfair to the new cast to try to measure up to the original. Keep It Oldskool remembers  In Living Color
