Award Tour

THE TOURS....

Keep It Oldskool realizes that there are tours every year and some of the biggest stars headline them  Jay Z, Kanye etc HOWEVER there is a difference in the prices of the ticket (A good seat would cost $29.50) In the 80s the tours that would come to a major city would have current Hall Of Fame artists on the bill. Although tours today will have the popular artists of the day Keep It Oldskool challenges anyone to put a current or recent tour against anyone of the tours listed below.

Fresh Fest Tour 1985
(Kurtis Blow, Whodini, Fatboys, Run-DMC, Jeckyll and Hyde,Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, Sugarhill Gang, Newcleus)
Not sure but may have been the first super Hip Hop tour.

Raising Hell Tour 1986
(RUNDMC, BEASTIE BOYS,LL COOL J, WHODINI)
Extroplate that! A tour with the biggest rap acts in the world and each a certain Hip Hop Hall of Famers . At the time Raising Hell album is all over the radio and everyone was wearing adidas with no shoestrings in them.

Dope Jam Tour 1988
(Ice T, Doug E Fresh, BDP, Kool Moe Dee,Biz Markie,Eric B and Rakim)
There was  Ice T opening up the show while the lights were still on, Kool Moe Dee  coming out of a smoke filled tube that just popped onto the stage,Doug E Fresh stepping out of a spinng globe. The highlight the evening which was Rakim sitting in a chair that came out of a pyramid and performed "Lyrics of Fury"

There were many other tours that come to mind The Nitro Tour,The Budweiser Superfests etc but the 3 tours listed above go down in history as some of the greatest in Hip Hop History

Keep it Oldskool movie of the week

Claudine a movie that was released in 1974 during the explosion of Blaxploitation movies of the 70s. This movie is a lot tamer and does not include a super brother/sister who must save the day. This movie tells the story of the struggle that a single mother with children has to face with love and bringing up her children. The cast included Diahann Carroll, James Earl Jones and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. Diahann Carroll was not initially chosen as the lead and only took the part after the original lead actress Diana Sands whom was dying of cancer asked her to take the roll.

The movie spoke about women with children by different fathers is/was not always the stereotype of a loose woman. When watching lead character Claudine Price struggle with her 6 children and having to use public assistance you understand that she wanted what most women want to be loved appreciated and care for her children. Her love interest in the movie is sanitation worker named "Roop" Rupert Marshall played to perfection by James Earl Jones. We watch as he struggles with the fact that he loves this woman but isn’t sure he wants to take the added responsibility of her children. We also see Claudine's oldest child  Charles played by Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs who as a member of the Black Panther like activist group who is fighting for social change views his mother with love and sometimes disdain for having so many children and believes that her new man will get her pregnant and leave as all the previous men in her life have.

Another aspect of this powerful movie is the "hoops" that Claudine needed to jump through to keep the much needed public assistance and to go as far as needing to hide any gifts that she receives as the dreaded public assistance worker would come and deduct the amount of any gift from the assistance that she gets. You can’t really say it has a happy ending as it is open ended. You see the ending and wonder if they were able to make it work in the long run. For her performance as "Claudine" Diahann Carroll was nominated for an Oscar in 1975. I caught this movie as a youth and before buying the VCR tape and now DVD watched it whenever it came on. My guess is a lot of women have seen or heard about this movie. For everyone else please seek and watch this treasure

Yo My name is

KEEP IT OLDSKOOL VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Original M & Ms

Everyone knows how skilled Eminem is vocally. And the Beastie Boys although Hip Hop hall of famers would never really win a "rhyme fight" There were 2 other M.Cs that were very skilled and although never really reached the level that Eminem  enjoys, they were respected as rappers not as a novelty. Formed in 1987 as "3 the Hard Way" the group featured  rappers Pete Nice, Mc Search and DJ Daddy Rich. DJ/Sam Sever who knew both rappers advised that the 2 should work together. Pete Nice who was attending Columbia University and hosted a radio show had to be convinced that the dancing locally known Mc Search would be a good fit together.

3rd Bass released their first album "The Cactus Album" in 1989 which featured singles The Gas Face, Steppin to the A.M, Products of the Environment and Brooklyn Queens. What separated this group from the Beastie Boys was that these 2 MCs were very skilled on the mic and to that point had never really been seen before. We will not even mention that Search did all the dance steps with the groups dancers. The debut album was released by Hip Hop powerhouse label Def Jam which had at one point had the Beastie Boys signed to the label so the comparisons were there. 3rd Bass did diss the Beastie Boys after they left Def Jam to sign with Capitol Records with a song called "Sons of 3rd Bass"

"Put to bed, three kids to a third track
Cap the front and grip, when they heard that
The crew from the L.Q. stepped to the Club Mars
Shook the Beast' and soon to be dubbed stars"

The debut album went on to achieve gold status (500,000 copies sold) The group did release a follow up album called Derelicts of Dialect in 1991 which contained the only released single from that album "Pop Goes the Weasel" having moved on from previous targets the Beastie Boys the song and video was blatant attack on Vanilla Ice who had come on to the scene. The song spoke of rap artists allowing themselves to be used in any matter (Vanilla Ice in the Ninja Turtles Movie) and that the commercialization of Hip Hop was causing damage to a real art form. That album also went on to achieve gold status. The group disbanded in 1992 with MC Search going solo and Pete Nice and Daddy Rich becoming a duo. MC Search went on to release "Return of the Product" in 1992 and the Pete Nice/Daddy Rich 1993 release was called "Dust to Dust"  After that Serch was instrumental in getting Nasty Nas signed to Columbia Records by putting him on song "Back to the Grill Again" Nas' second major label recording. Pete Nice runs a sports bar and a sports memorabilia store. Search host a radio show in Detroit. They briefly reunited for performances in 1998 and 1999 and there is a rumored reunion tour to celebrate the 25 anniversary of the "Cactus Album"

Although Eminem owes a debt of thanks to the Beastie Boys whether he knows or not he owes a greater debt to 3rd Bass as they were the first "yo did hear that verse from that white boy"

Is the cousin of Death

Don't Sleep

Some of the greatest albums where ones that when they came out were largely ignored. A lot of Hip Hop icons released albums that for one reason or another came and went. It's a given that a lot of not well known artists released albums that were ignored. KEEP IT OLDSKOOL wants everyone to know like "Dap" said in School Daze "WAAAAAAAKE UPPPPPP" and sleep no more on these albums. These albums are not in any kind of order and not be any means the only albums that were slept on.

Ride the Rhythm by Chill Rob G (1989)
File:Ridetherhythm.jpg

Weightless by Skinny Boys (1986)

Take a Look Around by Master Ace (1990)

Word Life by O.C  (1994)
File:Wordlife.jpg

No Mercy by Da Youngstas (1994)
File:Da-youngstas-no-mercy.jpg

Runaway Slave by Showbiz and AG (1992)

Even established stars in the Rap game came out with albums that were "slept on"  Most of the above artists albums were victims of poor promotion, bad advice from management (Skinny Boys should have never went with that name) label folding (Masta Ace) and songs being stolen  (Chill Rob G's "The Power" was overshadowed by Snap and the wack rapper they had Turbo D) Below are some better known artist who had releases that did not get the acclaim they should have

Sex and Violence by Boogie Down Productions (1992)
File:Sex and Violence BDP.jpg
This follow up to Edutainment was not only the last album under the BDP moniker it featured songs like 13 and Good,Duck Down, Like a Throttle and Poisonous Products sold only half of what previous album did. Krsone  believed that it did not sell well based on the PM Dawn incident where BDP ran on to the stage during a PM Dawn concert performance for a verbal diss the lead singer of the group threw his way.

 H.N.I.C by Prodigy (2000)

This album released by one half of the duo Mobb Deep featured production from Havoc,The Alchemist, Just Blaze and Rockwilder was a great album that came and went mostly due to no real promotion and the label Relativity Records seeing fit to only release one single the banger "Keep it Thoro" this album however is stands the test of time and is a good album

The Main Ingredient by Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth

This album released 1994. After the massive success of 1992s Mecca and The Soul Brother this follow up album was overlooked. The singles were "Take You There","Searching" and "I Got A Love" which were great songs but none of them was  a "T.R.O.Y"  from the Mecca and the Soul Brother album. There was the added issue of infighting between the 2 and it was their last studio album to date.  This album was one the best albums released in 1994 but was overshadowed by releases by Nas, Notorious B.I.G and a few others

This is not all of the albums that have been slept on. If you can think of any others please feel free to comment or add to the list.  Don't sleep on this column.

"Every Good Hero should have some"

THE KEEP IT OLDSKOOL MOVIE OF THE WEEK

I'm Gonna Get You Sucka is a 1988 movie that was a parody of the 70s Blaxploitation movies. The movie was written and directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans who had co-written Hollywood Shuffle and Eddie Murphy Raw. The movie starred many of the icons of the 70s movies and television shows (Jim Brown, Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas and Ja'net Dubios) The movie introduced us to Keenan's younger brother Damon Wayans

The movie's plot centered around the epidemic of "OGing" or Over Golding meaning the amount of gold that people were wearing was in fact killing them. This of course was a veiled reference at the crack cocaine problem that was destroying the inner cities The "Black Hero" of the movie is named Jack Spade who enlists the help of former neighborhood protectors John Slade, Kung Fu Joe and Hammer and Slammer to bring down Mr. Big. The movie has plenty of memorable lines and scenes with some  of the most famous being when Jack goes home with a young woman he meets and finds out that everything thing is not always as it seems. Also when Fly Guy gets out of jail and realizes after ridicule of course that the fashions of have changed while he has been away. And lastly a hilarious scene with Chris Rock looking to buy a meal and Hammer and Slammer Rib shop

This movie was able to poke fun at the films that African Americans went to see in droves in the 70s. The movie also spotlighted that a lot of established Caucasian actors turned up in these movies. This movie that was made for 3 million dollars did not win awards made a modest profit of 13 million became more of a cult classic once it was released to VCR tape. It pops up now and again on cable and has since been released on DVD is great fun and is recommended to young and old. Parting shot Slammer (Jim Brown) after meeting Jack Spade for the first time "What makes you think you can be a Black Hero" Jack Spades thinks for a moment and says "I'm an ex professional football player" and Slammer has no choice to take a step back.

MC Ultra Magnetic Magnetic

Keep It Oldskool continues the classic collection

Critical Beatdown  by the Ultramagnetic MCs was released October 4th 1988. The was never before or has there been since a group like Ultramagnetic. The group featured one of the most unorthodox MCs ever Kool Keith. He didn’t care. From lyrics going at RUNDMC "say what Peter Piper hell wit childish rhymes" or even the God MC himself Rakim "Like fish it aint my favorite dish I grab a steak and a battle I wish"   The sample heavy album was produced mostly by Kool Keith's partner in rhyme Ced Gee and Moe Luv completed the group with the DJ duties.  The crew came onto the scene with  instant classic singles like 1986s "Ego Trippin" or 1987s "Traveling at the Speed of Thought  Signed to Next Plateau records Critical Beatdown gave an eclectic mix of 15 songs with the album length of 50.01 minutes.

Ced Gee's use of the SP-1200 sampler gave the beats a hard edge. Frequent beat collaborator the late Paul C also was on hand to assist. Ced Gee not to be over shaded by Kool Keith lyrically also had a distinct style. With lyrics like "scrape, like a butcher, "I'm carvin you're brain's starvin, I'm steady scarrin  plastic garden, the crowd is chargin"  these two distinct styles over base heavy beats made the Ultramagnetic MCs one of the most dynamic groups of that era. The group released 3 more official albums but none of them reached the level of critical or cult status that Critical Beatdown attained. The group which also at various times has featured Tim Dog and TR Love continues to do a now and again show. The album which was out of print for a long time was reissued in 2004.
The Ultramagnetic MCs released an instant classic 25 years ago. How many groups or rappers can say that they have done that?
